Twitter for moms? Why of course! Check out Twittermoms.com!

“Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything Better than you.”

Is what Megan Calhoun was singing the night she launched Twittermoms.com—OK probably not, but that’s what she should have been singing.

image

When I was first introduced to twitter, my husband had just come back from a Microsoft Influencer conference and was on his crack blackberry even more (I didn’t think it was possible-but it was) then he usually was. I asked him what on earth he was doing, so he told me he was tweeting. I LMAO at him, telling him he’d gone off the deep end. What on earth was tweeting?

When I first checked out twitter, I thought, who on earth has time for this. But then again, you make time for things you’ become obsessed with. *ahem-facebook sound familiar?*

Twitter

New to twitter? Check out my first posting on twitter

I thought, are there any mom’s who are tweeting? Because as it stood, the only people who I knew that were tweeting were my husbands’ work colleagues, people who were working outside the home and people with blackberries. Was I the only Internet obsessed mom? Certainly not.

While surfing twitter a couple days ago, I noticed that sittercity had tweeted that if you were a mom you had to check out www.twittermoms.com, so off I went. And what did I discover? A wonderfully addictive website that has me hooked.

So What is Twittermoms.com?

According to Megan’s site:

Twittermoms is an online version of the three martini playdate. Chat about the adventures of being a mom. It’s always happy hour here!

Megan (the creator of this highly addictive site) is a mommy of two, founder of Twittermoms.com and a children’s book author.

When I joined this site, she personally messaged me to welcome me to the group, she followed me on twitter, she read AND commented about my latest blog posting and added that if I needed anything to just message her!

What a wonderfully personal touch, when’s the last time you were welcomed to a site you joined by a personal message from the founder of the site? —I should mention that TotSpot was also very personal when I joined.

So what can you do on Twittermoms.com?

  1. Meet and tweet with other moms! This means that you can now have other moms follow you on twitter, find other moms on twitter and check out each other’s blogs!
  2. Advertise your blog! I’m sure we’re all searching for those wonderful things we call visitor’s to up our traffic on our blogs, well ladies this is a great place to do that! Gain exposure and ideas for your latest blog postings.
  3. Post pictures of your friends, family, and yes the kiddies! You can even upload videos!
  4. Start Discussions about topics you may want a little advice or input in.
  5. Start a group to find like minded mommies you may want to chat with!

The Bottom Line

I could probably wax poetic about Twittermoms.com all night, but I think all you social moms should really check this website out. I know as moms we don’t have very much “me” time, but if you do tweet on twitter, or you are a mommy blogger looking to meet some other mommy blogger friends this is the place for you.

I was talking with my husband today telling him that most of the successful blogging women I have come in contact with all happen to be women who at one point or another have been successful career women.  These career women-who have become mommies, are now looking for an outlet to stay creative, to remain in touch with the real world, and hell just be normal for 30 minutes during the day. Even if the blog does revolve around puking, spitting, peeing or poop.

Above all else, these are funny, intelligent women (who happen to be mommies) are singing at the world, “Anything you can do, I can do better, I can do anything better then you.”

So if you are reading this blog and know of some wonderfully smart women who would benefit from something like Twittermoms.com, tell her to log on and get started! I promise you, she won’t be disappointed!

And if you’re not tweeting yet, why not?

Real Tech Mom meets NY Times!

Well my 15 minutes of fame is up I suspect. Yes, I think this little article will be my shot at “fame.” One of the first blog postings I put up on this wonderful blog of mine was dedicated to an awesome site called TotSpot.  Seeing as how I was one of the 1000′s of subscribers to join TotSpot, the NY Times journalist CAMILLE SWEENEY and I had a 20 minute chat about my experiences with TotSpot and social networking for babies

For the 20′ minutes we spoke about my experiences about motherhood and using the Internet to connect with other moms and other family members out of province. We spoke about what I had hoped to get out of TotSpot and I had mentioned to her that it will be neat for him to see this virtual timeline along with pictures and journal entries versus a regular baby book that my not include pictures of him at 3 weeks, 6 weeks and older.  She also posed the question, “was this his first introduction to the online world?” And yeah, this is like us making a mark for him on the Internet, I had never considered that before.

Many thanks go out to Michael Broukhim, the creator of TotSpot. He’s been an wonderful person to have come in contact with. When I had an issue with TotSpot, not only did he contact me personally, he solved my problem amazingly fast. In fact his whole team are very friendly and are  more than willing to help.

Interestingly enough the article lists our location as Winnipeg, Ontario and we live in Winnipeg, Manitoba.  But my son’s name is in the NY Times, how cool is that???  He’s also not quite 7 months old, but closer to 6 months, but who’s counting? Oh and my husband who was reading over the article noticed she listed me as Ms. Carrasco instead of Mrs. Carrasco, So I guess I’m single for eternity in the eyes of the Times LOL

But none of this would have been possible without the power of Twitter, seriously twitter rocks!!! If not for Twitter my husband would have never seen a tweet from Michael in regards to the NY Times article! Woo hoo for Twitter!

But my Son’s name is in the NY Times, how cool is that-oops! did I say that already???

Top Pregnancy Books: What to read before baby comes

Now there is a lot of information out there these days, and of course everyone and their dog has and opinion, yours truly included, but here are some of my picks.

Now I am posting this post with a side of caution. Books are wonderful tools to educate and inform you on topic’s you don’t necessarily know much about. They allow us to gain some type of knowledge about things we may have not ever heard about. They also educate you on things you may not want to know. They may educate you so well that you now fear everything you read, because of course my baby might “have that.” And then all the what if’s come into play. If you find yourself getting to that point with all the book reading and Internet browsing all you newly pregnant people are doing… I urge you to stop–at least for a little while.

Along with everything else on this blog, the following are books that either I have read or friends of mine have recommended. Some hated a certain book while others LOVED it. To each their own. Now that I’ve put my little disclaimer of caution up, let’s begin:

1)  Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy

imageI think that everyone should read this book. This book is not going to educate you on specific medical terms or tell you what size your baby is at a certain point. What this book does do is allow new moms to laugh at all the crazy changes that happen to your body during pregnancy. She is a no nonsense type of person that tells it like it is. She does warn you that some of what she writes about will make you laugh, and some will scare the crap out of you.  But basically I love this book because it addressed a lot of things not even touched upon in regular “medical” baby books, especially the stuff most people are embarrassed to ask about! I read it in a day, and laughed my ass off.

2) Your Pregnancy Week by Week By Glade B. Curtis, Judith Schuler

image

While I was in Chapters one fine afternoon, I was so confused as to which book to get to educate myself on what was going on with my body. I went into the baby section and let me tell you–there was no shortages of books on being pregnant. I had no idea what was the best book and I couldn’t justify spending hundreds of dollars on pregnancy books and I actually made myself put a few back. I kept this one because it goes through each week of your pregnancy and shows you a picture of how big your baby is, what is developing and how your body is changing.  I liked knowing when my baby was the size of a plum, I tried not to skip ahead to each week so that I had something to look forward to each new week, but none the less I did anyway’s.

3)  Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn: The Complete Guide By Penny Simkin, Janet Whalley, and Ann Keppler

imageThis book was recommended to me by my Doula. It is one of the books that she had to read while she was training to become a Doula. What I liked about this book was that it went really in depth. So if you are the type of person who is looking for medical terminology and specifics on certain disorders then this is the holy grail for you!  I think it’s a fabulous resource because not only does it go through pregnancy, it also goes through labour and caring for your newborn!

4) The Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg and Melinda Blau

image I’m sure there are a few mom’s out there who will shake their head at me and call me crazy for putting this book on this list, but for all of those who would be shaking their heads, there are an equal amount of your who are saying ” I love this book.” This book is all about routine, and as Tracy put’s it, not a schedule, a routine. If you take anything away from this book it should be the E.A.S.Y routine she set’s up.  It is anything but easy! I read this book and thought:  Ok, now I’m prepared, I’ll just put my little one on this system right away and I’ll be set.Sure that would have worked better if my little one actually did what she said he was going to do if I fed him enough during the day, but he did not. He still got up to nurse every 1.5-2 hours at night, not matter how much he was eating, and yes I did do a yield, there was nothing wrong with my supply, heck I would get 6 oz in one pumping session. But I do agree with this routine thing, She also has tips on starting solids as well, I’m just reading that part now because I didn’t want to cloud the brain with information I was likely to forget by the time my son was ready for Solids. I will be posting a more in depth review of E.A.S.Y in the days to come so please check back!

5) From the Hips: A Comprehensive, Open-Minded, Uncensored, Totally Honest Guide to Pregnancy, Birth, and Becoming a Parent By Rebecca Odes, and Ceridwen Morris

image

This book was great for two reasons, it went through all topics from both perspectives. For example, in a nonjudgmental way, it went through breastfeeding in depth and formula feeding indepth. It also had real parent comment that didn’t paint everything through rose coloured glasses, which is nice to hear because sometimes you think you are all alone in some thoughts you have.

The Ugly:

The following books are going to be placed on the Ugly list. That means that the majority of people that I talked to about these books absolutely hated them.

1) Babywise

Reason it’s disliked: To strict on the routine, made many parents uncomfortable with methods that were described. One mom felt so strong that she thinks the book “should be burned.” (Sonya)

2)What to Expect when you’re Expecting

Reason it’s disliked: this book is “overly strict” and very “old fashioned” according to Kelly Campbell. It also focuses on everything that could go wrong at every stage of your pregnancy. Bottom line, there are better books that cover the other half of pregnancy as well.

3)Healthy Sleep Habits, happy child by Marc Weissbluth

“some of the info on sleep is useful, but the author’s style is terrible, disorganized and he’s been known to cause anxiety attacks in a few mothers (including me) because he makes you believe that if you screw up teaching your child to sleep, they are going to be scarred for life! he has all these strict rules about sleep and all these crazy warnings about what not to do, his approach is way too systematic and babies are not robots, I’m sorry” (Daniela)

The Mentionable:

The following is a short list of books that many women felt deserved to be on this list so here they are:

1)I’m Pregnant (Canadian Edition)By Lesley Regan
Recommended by Andrea

Here’s why:

1. The pictures are AMAZING, especially in the early going when the whole pregnancy seems unreal.  You know you are pregnant and yet you don’t look it or feel it (other than being tired I didn’t have any other symptoms). So the pictures made it seem more real and I felt like I had a window into what was going on inside me.

2. It doesn’t just say “this may happen to you” or “you may experience this”, it explains WHY our bodies do what they do, respond how the do.  I always want to know why something happens or how something happens.

3. The descriptions of what is developing when and how are great.  It’s not exactly week – by – week, it’s more like a few weeks at a time, but the information is fantastic.

4. They cover every topic I was even slightly curious about, with good, clear information.

2)”Your Baby & Child” by Penelope Leach
Recommended by Kelly Campbell

Here’s Why:

It’s a really great book. She’s a children’s rights advocate and the book is big on being sensitive to the child’s needs, thinking about things from their perspective, etc. It’s kind of attachment parenting, but unlike the Sears books, it doesn’t make you feel guilty for not co-sleeping or wearing your baby all the time. It’s a very balanced approach with lots of practical daily care info as well. However, it’s written in a very narrative style, so if you’re not a big reader it might be a little annoying/daunting to get through it and find the information you need.

3)The Baby Book by Dr. Sears
Recommended by Daniela

definitely the best book I bought on pregnancy, breastfeeding and baby care; his style is very sensible and definitely not preachy like the baby whisperer and healthy sleep habits

4)Happiest Baby on the block by Dr. Harvey Karp

The happiest baby on the block is also in book form, and if you want an indepth view into the reason behind the magic, it’s worth a read, but the DVD shows you so much more!

The Bottom Line

What to remember is that no matter how many books you read, you–the mother/parent know best. Every baby is different, and just because your baby does not do what the book says baby will do, DOES NOT mean that you are a bad mother. It does not mean you are failing and it does not mean that your baby will not do these things on their own or a little later on.

There are so many books out there, that you can get information over load. If you feel overwhelmed put the books down. My best piece of advice is to take the books as a suggestion and not as the manual to raise your child by. Each book may have a little something you can take from it, so I encourage you to take from it what you can and discard the rest. Not everything will apply to your baby.

My sister could not believe how many books I wanted to read, she said she couldn’t be bothered to read them, for her instincts kicked in and she assured me they would kick in for me too, but I was too afraid not to read everything under the sun. Some books made me feel very prepared before I had my son, and then when he was born, I followed some books to a tee and he wasn’t “performing” like I had expected him to, which stressed the crap out of me. I finally had to just let it go, my son does not like to conform, end of story. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t try long enough or hard enough, he just wanted to do what he wanted. And while he is a very routine oriented baby, it was VERY hard to teach him certain things.

One more thing, books can make it sound easy. They may simply put the theory as a matter of fact statement and that might make you think, “oh, all I have to do is ________,” well doing _______ might take nights of sleeplessness and days of crankiness, not everything happens overnight.

The best thing I can say to you parents to be is, take it easy on yourselves, this journey is not easy, and no one is perfect–no matter how many books you read. As my husband puts it, nothing that is easy is worth it. The challenges that are before you will truly alter your lives forever, but in the end it’s all worth it. Keep in mind, you may not feel that way right after birth, but trust me, the feeling will come!

How Do I Know what kind of car seat to buy?

How Do I know what kind of Car Seat to buy?

Ask yourself these four things:

1) How well will it Fit my child?
2)Is it Easy to install and use correctly every time?
3) Will it fit my car?
4) How much will it cost?

While most car seat’s that come in your travel system’s have a separate base to install, not all do.  Some have a leveling system built right into the car seat and others have it built into the base. But in any case most of these car seats will fit into tight spaces.

While you hope that your child does not outgrow the height and/or weight restrictions (for the infant car seat) before they’re one years old, many outgrow their car seat by 6 months. Weight restrictions vary anywhere from 18-25 lbs, so be aware, that if you have a chunky monkey on your hands, you may need to purchase your next seat before your bundle of joy turn’s 1.

So What kind of Car Seats are there? There are many–from infant seats to booster seats and everything in between.

Infant Car Seats

Max height: 32″, Child Age: Under age 1, Child Weight: 4-30lb

  • Can be used rear-facing only
  • Maximum weight limits usually around 20 – 22 pounds
  • Removable base for easy movement of baby without waking him or her
  • Extra bases available for purchase to make it possible to use the same car seat or carrier in multiple vehicles. Keep a base in each car and use just the one carry for transfer between cars
  • Smaller seat cradles newborns better; some experts consider it a safer option than a Convertible seat for infants
  • Compatible with strollers to create a convenient baby travel system
  • Will only be able to be used for about a year, even less in most cases depending on how fast your child grows

Check out Consumer Reports Ratings of the top Infant Car Seats! (These are Canadian Standards)

Transport Canada’s Stage one information guide.

Convertible Car Seats

Max height 49″, Child age: 0-5 years, Child Weight: 5-65 lbs

  • Convertible car seats are the only car seats that can be installed and used both rear-facing and forward-facing. Rear-facing weight limits are normally between 25 and 35 lbs. However, you must keep a child rear-facing at least until they hit age 1 and 20 lbs. Most governments recommend keeping kids rear-facing as long as possible. Forward-facing weight limits can be anywhere between 40 and 80 lbs, depending on the model.
  • Consider the fit. The higher the weight limit of a convertible seat, the more space it will take up in your car. Compare measurements and check out carseatdata.org to see if the car seat you want will fit in your vehicle.
  • Convertible car seats do not fit into your stroller travel systems.
  • Although most convertible car seats feature weight minimums around 5 pounds, a convertible car seat is not ideal for use with an infant. Most convertible car seats function as baby’s second car seat after they outgrow their infant car seat. If you do use a convertible car seat with an infant, look for models with included extras like head support and removable infant inserts. These extras help provide a snug fit for small children.

Youth and Toddler Car seats

Max Child Height 19″-59″, Child age: 1-8 years, Child weight 20-80 lbs

  • Can be used forward-facing only.
  • Minimum weight requirement of 20 lbs.
  • Maximum weight limits of 40 – 80 lbs.
  • Semi-permanent install, no removable base, once installed properly and securely it should be uninstalled rarely to adjust shoulder harness heights or to remove the 5-point harness for use as a Belt Positioning Booster on some models.
  • Not compatible with strollers
  • Depending on the seat, your child may be able to use this seat for up to at least the age of 8. For many children, a Youth/Toddler seat will be the last car seat they will be in. Or you could choose to skip the use of a Youth/Toddler seat and go straight from a Convertible seat to a Booster seat.

To Check out reviews of different models of car seats go to http://www.elitecarseats.com

See what Consumer Reports has to say about the different Car Seats.

Transport Canada’s Stage two guide.

Transport Canada

If you live in Canada, you must purchase your Car seat in Canada. Transport Canada has imposed more strict safety regulation on Car Seat Manufacturer’s. If you get into a collision with a car seat not approved by Transport Canada, all insurance bet’s are off–and you may get a steep fine.

Check out Transport Canada’s road safety tips for you and the family, also check on stage three and four of the safety guide!

The Bottom Line

We purchased the Peg Perego Primo Viaggio SIP to fit with our Pliko P3 Stroller. While it has high safety factors, it was VERY heavy and bulky. My son hated it, he cried every time he was in it.  He also has out grown it at just under 6 months of age. But for the safety factor I would use this car seat again.

Our next choice is the Britax Marathon convertible car seat. It’s like night and day with this kid. It seems he’s got more room and he just relaxes in it! It’s also really easy to take him in and out of it! Well worth the money!

I don’t think that you have to spend the big cash on car seats just make sure that they fit in your car, they meet the safety standards and that your child is comfortable in them. See if the place you are purchasing your car seat from will allow you to return it if it doesn’t fit or babe doesn’t like it. Or if you have a friend with the same car seat, see if you can try your baby out in it.

Best of luck!

Infomercial’s that actually work!

Yes, it’s true that I’m a sucker for infomercials. I’ve bought my share of things from infomercials over the years and admittedly most have gathered dust around my house. But I’m here to tell the truth on two items that have worked and a third that probably works but I couldn’t stand to do it so I can’t advocate its effectiveness. All products are from www.beachbody.com.

Slim in 6

imageDebbie Seibers is a crazy woman who developed a wonderful workout series that in my opinion work your lower body to its fullest capacity–in just 6 weeks.

What is it?

Its tagline is “Slim Training combines cardio with light resistance moves to help you burn fat and sculpt a lean, sexy body—especially your abs, thighs, and buns.” While it does work out your entire body, it’s really focused on your lower body with all different types of squats, lunges, and plié’s.  I purchased this video before my wedding and lost 15lbs and quite a few inches around my lower body.  The beginning DVD(Start it up) is good to get a adjusted to, the intermediate(Ramp it up) one is the one I spent the most time on because it was a good length (47 minutes) and I got a good work out!  When I was at the top of my “game” I did the advanced (Burn it up) but man was I done after that work out! I found that her sculpting was combined with the cardio and that makes all the difference.  The upper body is tricky because you have to really want to work out those arms in order for her methods to work as you can really just rest your hands on your hips. She does have a section for you to work your arms out with resistance bands which is good too! Over all it was a good buy.

What you’ll get:

When you order Online it’s basically $60.00 plus Shipping. What you’ll get for your money is: Start it up, Ramp it Up, and Burn it up. You’ll also get a few bonus’s:

Slim & 6-Pack advanced abs routine for flat, sexy abs.  (11 minutes)

Slim & Limber flexibility routine to revitalize you on your days off. (14 minutes)

6-Day Express™ Diet Plan to help you lose up to 6 pounds in your first week! Also includes a handy journal and shopping list.

Power 90

image Tony Horton is the creator of this system. His most renowned stuff is the P90X which is the advanced system of this Power 90–which aims at transforming your body in 90 days.

What is it?

I’m sure those of you who have the ability to run for your cardio workout… this one will work for you, but I have no lung capacity, so I had a hard time with this work out. Not that it doesn’t work, my husband really liked it. Tony is a little crazy, I mean not tony little crazy but a funny crazy that makes you laugh! He likes sweat LOL.

What you’ll get:

Sculpt Circuit 1–2 Easy moves that work to tone, firm, and strengthen your entire body. (29 minutes)
Sweat Cardio 1–2 Fun, innovative cardio moves, kickboxing, Pilates, and more to burn fat and shed inches fast! (36 minutes)

6-Day Fat Burning Express plan Lose up to 10 lbs. and 10 inches in just 6 days with this proven weight loss plan.
Success measurement card and tape measure Tools to help you stay motivated and achieve your goals.

Turbo Jam (Maximum Results)

imageI am in love with this product. It is actually fun to do. Not only is Chalene Johnson a great motivator but she’s cookey and crazy so you can have a LOT of fun with this workout. Chalene’s work out is aerobics and toning with the focus on your core. She has people designated for the low impact side of things so you don’t have to do anything’s your knees may not let you do! Out of all the products I’ve purchased she’s my favourite. Its music from the early 90′s that just makes you get into the groove of things! In the package I got the turbo sculpt, cardio party, ab jam and the learn and burn. Make sure you learn with Learn and burn how to use her moves effectively.

It again is $60.00 USD plus shipping–noticing a pattern here? And here are the bonus’s you’ll get: (I don’t have the maximum results one, but I can go buy weighted gloves here at any Wal-Mart so I’m not spending shipping and Duty on this)

Turbo Sculpting Gloves Scientifically proven to increase muscle activity by up to 96% so you get ripped even faster!
Punch, Kick & Jam Advanced workout specially designed to tap into the power of the Turbo Sculpting Gloves! (50 minutes)
Turbo Slim® rapid results program An easy-to-follow meal plan and measurement tool to help you lose up to 10 inches in just 10 workouts!

I find that I get enough out of the cardio party that I don’t do the sculpt, but that’s only because I have the slim in 6, I find that it’s more effective with all the squats. As for the ab jam, now that is a work out! If you already had turbo jam, the new one (maximum results) has hand weights to intensify the muscle burning for your arms!

The Bottom Line

I love to combine Slim in 6 and Turbo jam for the best results. Cardio party and Ramp it up is where it’s at for me to work at my core and my lower body at the same time.  They also have something called WOWY.com (Work Out With You) that really helped me keep track at what I was doing. Very helpful.

Note: if you are not a US resident you don’t qualify for discounts on your purchases even if you subscribe ($39.95 USD every three months). But for US customer’s there is a break on price and you can actually win money and prizes by signing up to work out! How cool is that?!  So if you need a buddy to work out with and you can commit to a time to work out this thing rocks!

With any work out system, you have to actually want to do it, it won’t work out for you! So if you are committed to working out, the above are systems that actually work!
