MPI (Manitoba Public Insurance) has changed their recommendations for a rear facing child. MPI now states a child must be rear facing in Manitoba until the child is 22lbs and can walk. The reason being is that when a child can walk they will have more core stability (muscle strenght) which will help withstand the additional pressure from an accident when forward facing. MPI still recommends keeping a child rear facing as long as possible even past the recommended weight and walking.

I recommend the Evenflo convertible seat, it has come down in price drastically in the last 3 years (since I bought it) and is now sold at Walmart for $140. I also have a Summit car seat which my son says 'hurts his bum'.

For a second car seat I'd recommend considering the new First Years one at Zellers. It's rear facing to a high weight (35 or 38 pounds I think) and forward facing to 65 pounds. It also has one of the highest shoulder slots available - important because a lot of kids outgrow the seat in height before they do in weight. It's also $100 cheaper than the often recommended Britax Marathon ($150 cheaper since it's on sale this week). Remember, not only is it important to keep your kids rear facing as long as possible, but it's important to keep them in the front facing harness as long as possible too, and not rush switching to a booster. For info about why check this out:
