I was reading the paper today when I came across an interesting article about baby proofing your electrical outlets in new homes. It made me think of LipZips wordless Wednesday. Which refer to these:

Here’s what the new code would require:

“The updated code requires new homes to have tamper-resistant receptacles, designed to prevent children from inserting objects like hairpins, keys and nails which could cause them to receive a shock.”

–on a side note, if your child is playing with nails, you may have bigger problems then them being electrocuted!

When I saw this article, I thought of these:

Which we installed in my son’s room, but I have to say, they suck. The plugs always manage to slip out and never stay put.

“The new receptacles have a built-in shutter system that prevents anything from going into just one hole. The shutters will open only if two prongs are heading into the holes at the same time.”

These are permanent fixtures that would go on the wall, it’s designed to prevent kids from sticking more then one thing at a time in the outlet  (like hairpins, keys.. or anything metal)

They also say that they’ve done research and that kids who are at the “sticking stuff in outlet age” don’t have the capacity to stick more then one thing in each side at the same time.  I’m sure there are kids out there who would defy their logic but it’s an interesting concept.

At home depot, a cover that we bought was about 8$, that’s quite expensive if you’re doing your whole house, and maybe it was our old electrical outlets or our shoddy installation, but I’m not impressed with ours. Plus we only did his room.

While its not mandatory to make these changes to comply with the electrical code,  you can still use the little plugs for your old house. However, it was also stated that they’re not ideal.  And could you imagine, calling and electrician (which they recommend) to install these covers on all of your outlets? Maybe I’ll win the lottery so I can protect my child. But until then, it will be the little plastic things.

A little inspiration

14 Jan 2009 In: Mom

A friend sent this to me this morning on Email and it’s just so wonderful, I thought I would share it with you.  Every time you give up on something, you give up on yourself.  Imagine your life as this man.

Thanks to Sonya for passing this on!

Happy New Year to all of my readers (if there are any left!) I have sooo neglected this blog of mine over the holidays. But have no fear, I’m back from blog vacation!  I have enjoyed reading all of the blogs of the  people who haven’t gone on vacation over the holidays.

cleaning up after the holiday mess

Stay tuned for my failed attempt at taking an imprint of my son’s hand for my husbands birthday. If any of you have ever done it, you will understand that not just one person can do it! What a mess!

Oh and a little update about our Sponsor Child! We got a little package with his photo and how to contact him so I’m looking forward to writing a letter (my mother in law said she’d translate it for us) and sending him a little something!  Does anyone have any idea’s? It has to fit in a 6X9 envelope, be flat, and it can’t be money.

So to all of you, have a fantastic weekend, I’ll be back on Monday!

Sponsoring a Child

14 Dec 2008 In: Current Events, Random thoughts, Uncategorized

While researching my post for my Favourite Christmas songs, one video on YouTube of the John Lennon song War is over, brought me to tears.

It made me think how selfish I was to worry about how many presents to buy this year, or what kind of food to prepare to impress my guests.

There are so many children out there who have no family because of war or disease. Who have to work and not go to school. Who are old before their time.

image I looked at this picture and fell in love:

This is Marco Jose from Peru.  It feels odd to go through photo after photo and try to decide which person to sponsor, I just didn’t know how I was going to choose but I looked at him and fell in love. I guess that’s what I was looking for.

But I had a hard time “picking” my child.

Here’s why:

1) You can select what country, what age, if they’re a hope child (living with AIDS) and even see their picture.

2) When I picked someone, they ended up in my basket (the American site.)

I felt funny, like I was buying someone and they were in my basket. I also felt that I shouldn’t be able to pick, it should just go to the child that needs my help the most. But I wanted to look for a really young child (about my sons age or around it) and found Jose.  In about two weeks I’ll receive a picture and some information about him.

I just love that he has a pink sweater on and a red hat!

What I did notice about the children in all of the photo’s is that they mostly look sad. I’m sure they don’t have much to smile about, without proper clothes, food and shelter, not to mention love.

I read somewhere that poor people laugh more then rich people because they appreciate the simple things in life. God, I hope that is true. But to have children responsible for so much when they are so young is very sad.

I wish that they didn’t have to spend money on updating me with the child, I mean I LOVE to get updates but I would like them to spend the money on the kid.. you know?

I’ll keep you all posted on Marco!  If you are interested in sponsoring a child, please visit:

WorldvisionORG

World Vision was founded in 1951 by Dr. Robert Pierce, a young pastor and missionary, who had first been sent to China and South Korea in 1947 by the Youth for Christ missionary organization. Pierce remained at the head of World Vision for nearly two decades, but resigned from the organization in 1967

What I realized is that you can not only contribute monthly to help someone eat, and learn and grow. But you can buy a gift that gives for many years such as a goat or chickens.

So my $35 a month will help Marco receive things like clean water, nutritious food, health care, and access to education.

Anyway, with all of what’s wrong in this world, we can afford to do a little something that is right. Hope you can too!

About Erin Carrasco

Erin Carrasco (Real Tech Mom) is a mom of a beautiful baby boy born in March. She also looks after her other two kids (Mia and Keely, her two cats) and her wonderful husband of four years. It has taken some time getting used to not being at home every day, but being a mom is a different type of job and I admire the moms who get to be with their kids every day!

Moms like me know that just because everyone says you should do it, or not do it does not make it set in stone. For us dinner is never the same time every night and because of my husband’s job, our lives are ruled by overtime, extra overtime, travel and the crack blackberry. I am not only a mom, I’m a woman and human being. Believe it or not I do enjoy a lot more than just being a mom! Some of my passions are a little geeky but still they’re me none the less.
